Betws 10 Amman Quins
3
Betws 2nds returned
to winning ways with
a workman like win
over the Amman Quins
team. With the Amman
having disbanded
their youth team to
help the senior
sides, it was a
predominantly very
young Quins side (Kev
Lewis excepted) that
took to the field at
Heol Felin. Both
sides would probably
have liked to run
the ball but
conditions dictated
with plenty of
mistakes made.
Luckily for Betws
the home pack held
the upper hand and
over powered their
younger opponents
with Ted estimating
he faced 6 props
(although his
counting is shaky
above 5).
Lyndon Thomas led
the way with an
impressive debut at
No8, winning his
line out ball and
running strongly
into midfield to
earn Man of the
Match. In the backs
Harry Morris also
had an impressive
return scoring both
the teams tries.
Others deserving a
mention are lock
Gareth
Llews, who
played through the
pain barrier
(again), Seth and
Moony who covered
the field, Tristan
Evans (cos he gives
me stuff) and Gwilym
Lewis (cos I write
the reports).
The Quins reply was
a penalty from Gavin
Lewis which kept
them in touch. If
the Betws team were
disappointed not to
have scored more the
young Quins team can
take heart that they
might have stolen
the points. The main
interest in a
scoreless second
half was the sin
binning of ‘Cool
Hand’ Luke
Stratfford
(and Gavin Lewis)
which seemed to last
longer than the
game.
Finally a mention
for Betws legend
Alan ‘Iceman’ Thomas
who afterwards
announced his 3rd
(this season) and
final retirement
(yes really!!). At
52 Al has decided to
stop using rugby as
an excuse for
drinking and is
instead taking over
the Coopers pub.
Apparently this
really, really is
the end and the boys
will now only see Al
on ‘laps’ of Betws
or when the
internationals are
only on Sky.
