Betws 45 Cwmtwrch 8

Betws bounced back from their narrow defeat to league leaders Alltwen with an emphatic win thanks to the power of their pack. No 8 Dan Howells powered over from short range after only two minutes with outside half Gavin Davies adding the conversion.

Although dominating the lineouts through second-row Joe Adams, the homesters were unable to add to their lead until full-back Mathew Rees broke through to reward their pressure. A penalty from outside-half Oliver Jenkins reduced the deficit for a 12-3 half-time score.

In the second half, the homesters again started strongly with centre Gary Davies scoring after some impressive drives from the forwards, with brother Gary again adding the conversion. The home forwards continued to dictate play and scrum half Ben Hall quickly increased the lead when he finished off another powerful forward drive.

With the home pack continuing to apply the pressure they took full advantage with a short range scrum resulting in a penalty try followed by captain and wing forward Gavin Thomas pouncing for a further try from a short range lineout.

Outside-half Gavin Davies continued to torment the visitors defence and a well judged kick after breaking from his own half enabled flying full-back Mathew Rees to sprint through and grab his second try.

Cwmtwrch had the final word and restored some pride when they created an opening for wing Chris Hicks to score a consolation try.

 * Betws 2nds also had an impressive win in their 57-0 demolition of Llandeilo with the home team unable to compete with the pace of the visiting back division. Man of the match Mario D’Angelo created the openings for full-back Steve Jenkins to grab four tries with wing Rhys Williams adding 17 points from a try and six conversions.
