Betws 48 – Gowerton 5

Betws secured promotion with another convincing eight try mid-week win over visiting Gowerton, leaving them a bonus point win away from being crowned Division 5 South West Champions in their final fixture. The home team opened the scoring after 5 minutes when wing Mark Thomas broke through in mid-field from a well-rehearsed set piece move 25 metres out, with centre Gavin Davies adding the conversion.

However, Gowerton were intent on spoiling the party and continued to frustrate the homesters with stubborn defence until Betws produced an awesome display of rugby with five tries in the final 10 minutes of the half. A counter attack from near their own line was finished off by prop Ian Morris before No 8 Dan Howells powered over from a close range lineout. Cellan Davies then came off his wing to score a copycat version of the first try. From the kick-off, Gavin Davies made a scintillating 50 metre break before putting outside half Phil Saunders clear for a try, with Davies also adding the conversion.

Gowerton again kicked off only for full back Mathew Rees to burst upfield and following an exchange of passes with Cellan Davies, jinked over to complete a burst of three tries in the last three minutes of the half to give Betws a 36-0 lead.

To their credit, Gowerton recovered in the second half and continued to battle. Betws began to make silly errors as they tried perhaps a little too hard to increase their try count, but still managed to score a further two tries through Phil Saunders and Cellan Davies. Gowerton managed a consolation try through wing Will Lowther near the end as Betws eased off with one eye on the final match of the season against an improving Trebanos side.
