Betws 2nds 22
Kidwelly 0
By seeing off third
placed Kidwelly,
Betws 2nds
consolidated their
place in the table
just behind leaders
Newcastle Emlyn.
With 3 players lost
due to lack of
childcare facilities
perhaps the club
should look at
opening a crèche but
luckily Gavin Rees
and Paul Richards
were home to plug
gaps and Alan Iceman
Thomas came out of
retirement again to
help out.
Kidwelly, under the
eye of former Betws
favourite
Stevie John,
opted for passive
scrums which
disappointed Ted as
he was hoping for
another 6 this week.
Betws immediately
applied pressure but
couldn’t quite break
through for early
score despite plenty
of endeavour.
Kidwelly showed that
they were able to
play an open game
when they almost
went the length of
the field with a
sweeping movement.
This meant that
Betws would have to
turn pressure into
points and they
eventually did so,
Steff France
(despite suffering
from ‘ze
tight
amstring’)
got good position
with a trade mark
chip and chase and
when he added his
weight to a
resulting maul, the
room was created for
Richie
Griff to
dance over and
convert.
Just 7-0 up at the
break despite plenty
of pressure Betws
had more defending
to do second half
but managed to hold
firm with the likes
of Lee Moulton and
Nathan Jones
tackling hard.
Outside of the
scores the most
entertaining part
was Simon Jenkins 20
meter run, 5
backwards into
his own 22, 5
sideways at a right
angle to the touch
line and 10 forwards
beating 2 men.
Betws eventually
scored two sweeping
tries full of
quality running
through man of the
match Gavin Rees and
student bum Nathan
Murray and one jammy
one when Glyndwr
Thomas snaffled up a
loose ball from a
lost lineout.
Simon managed to
follow Gav and
Richie’s example
with the kicking and
missed from in front
of the posts. By
now Keith Evans was
on the field
rampaging about and
the game was safe
despite
Kidwelly’s
dangerous backs. As
they approach the
half way point in
their league
programme the 2nds
look well placed to
contest for honours.
