Betws 2nds 71 Llandeilo 0

Betws 2nds topped their recent 60 pointer against Pontyates with an emphatic victory over Llandeilo at Heol y Felin. The big team news was the return to action of Rhys Thomas and the small team news was that Alan Ice was out of retirement again.

Betws started well with two neatly taken tries from the backs which put them in a strong position but then proceeded to cock up a lot more chances

The pack put Llandeilo under a lot of pressure with the front row of Iceman, Phil Pugh and Gwilym taking a couple of balls against the head and Gwynfor and Paul Waff dominating the line outs.  Unfortunately the backs at this point seemed to be playing beach rugby with Freddie even taking his shirt off during one passage of play.  Towards the end of the half the backs did finally get their act together with Nathan Jones showing his father how it’s done with a neat double in the corner. Unfortunately for Betws, Paul took his frustrations out on Rhys.

After a disjointed 1st half, Betws managed to put the ball to use in the second half and scored some fine tries. I’ve no idea what order they were scored in but the pick of the bunch was Gethin Harris’s:  Freddie caught a wayward kick on the Llandeilo 22 but was wrapped up immediately.  Luckily, Paul Waff was on hand to secure the ball and form a maul, the big strong Betws forwards (and Lee Moulton) then drove in, initially driving towards the posts then slightly outwards.  Good body positions and communication was observed as they magnificently inched towards the line.  Llandeilo did try to collapse but Betws showed excellent control to stay upright and move within striking range of the try line.  Rocket then peeled off to crash over for a splendid try, good work from the forwards – (the rest were all backs tries).

The game degenerated towards the end as injuries took their toll and Rhydian Murray tried to turn the opposing Captain into a mummy with his bandages. Although Betws racked up the scores it must be said that it was far from easy up front and also that Llandeilo kept trying to the end.  The other Betws scores were: Harry Morris – 5 tries and 4 conversions, Freddie Morris – a try and 2 conversions, Nathan Murray got a try and a conversion whilst Richie Griff still had the energy to convert his try after an 80 meter intercept.

The stand out players for Llandeilo (from a Betws viewpoint anyway) were: Simon Jenkins, Paul Jones, Anthony O’Neil, Gareth Underwood, Steffan France and Andrew Eyes.  Harry Morris was controversially named Man of the Match

Betws XV: Freddie Dreamer, Nathan Jones, Lee Moulton, Harry Morris, Mario (Simon Jenkins), Richie Griff, Nathan Mint, Gwilym Lewis, Phil Pugh, Alan Iceman, Paul Waff, Gwynfor, Rhys Twp, Roced, Luke Bam Bam.
