Glais 9 – Betws 21 Betws were made to struggle against a big home pack, with the whistle happy referee awarding numerous penalties against the visitors throughout. The homesters began strongly and penned Betws back throughout the opening quarter, but visiting second-rows Joe Adams and Iestyn Williams continued to frustrate the home attacks at the lineout. Betws maintained a determined defensive effort, but the homesters eventually opened the coring with a penalty from outside-half Mark Kettley as reward for their pressure. Continuous infringements from both teams led to further penalty kicks with Kettley adding a second and opposite number Gavin Davies converting two for a 6-6 half-time score. The visitors were down to 14 men at the start of the second half when player-coach Gary Davies was sin-binned for an alleged dangerous tackle with Kettley taking advantage with a further penalty to go into a 9-6 lead. A double change after 10 minutes of the second half however paid instant dividends for Betws when prop Rob Gray powered through from a lineout. The ball was spread wide quickly to fellow sub Rhys Williams whose superior pace earned him a try under the posts with his first touch of the ball. Gavin Davies added the simple conversion and then quickly added to the score with a 40 metre drop goal for a lead to Betws of 16-9. The visiting pack then proceeded to gain the upper hand with a man-of-the-match performance from flanker Alun Rees, newly out of retirement to inspire a forward platform for a strong finish. A typical strong run from Gary Davies in midfield together with a well-timed pass saw co-centre Phil Saunders sprinting clear from 30 metres to score in the corner and extend the lead. Betws continued to apply the pressure in the final 10 minutes but were unable to add to their score due to wrong options being taken and dubious refereeing decisions. The visit of Ystradgynlais this coming weekend is now eagerly anticipated! |
