Betws take multinational approach

(Published in Carmarthen Journal Weds, September 19th, 2007)

Betws RFC are developing a multinational approach to rugby and are hoping it leads to success this season. The village club pride themselves on the welcome given to all players and last season saw Polish hooker Majik Frozard join the likes of Frenchman Stephane Boissinot and Welsh Italian Mario D’Angelo. Over the summer the club produced their first internationals when brothers Freddy and Harry Morris were capped for the Philippines.

The two brothers qualify through their mother and played in both matches of a tri-nations tournament against India and Guam. They played a full part in the “Volcanoes” triumphs over Guam (39-3) and India (11-3) with Harry bagging his first international try. Betws Captain Paul Roberts said: “Obviously the club are very proud of the boys for getting the call-up and they worked really hard over the summer. Hopefully the training and experience they have gained will also benefit us over the coming campaign.”

The Club are also looking abroad for their tour this season, travelling to Nantes in France on the weekend Wales take on Fiji in the World Cup. The club will take on local side XV de l’Erdre on the Friday night (September 28th). Tour Secretary Gwilym Lewis explained: “The area is not a rugby hotbed but the Erdre club are really forward thinking and are using it as part of a recruitment drive. Our match kicks off at 8.00pm and will be preceded by a whole day of schools rugby, exhibitions and live music. They are making a real effort for us and are expecting a four-figure crowd to come along and watch us. Our last tour to Spain was a great success and I’m sure that this will be just as memorable.”

The tour was organised by Stephane Boissinot and Mario D’Angelo will be tour captain. “I’m sure he’ll do a great job,” added Mr Lewis. “It’s a big honour for him. We also hope that the Erdre team will visit us in the future. We’re always looking out for players at Betws and there’s a welcome for them, whatever nationality.”
