BETWS OVER 50’s CLUB

The Betws Over 50’s Club meets every Thursday afternoon at 2pm in the Lounge Bar of the Betws RFC Clubhouse. The Club was initially formed in December 2004 when a group comprising Graham and Norma Vaughan, Audrey Jones and Keith Rees met with Betws RFC officials to discuss the possibility of using the premises as a venue for club meetings.

Following its formation, a group of between 10 and 15 people started getting together on Thursday afternoons for a chat and refreshments but its reputation grew rapidly and due to the increase in numbers it became obvious to all that the club had to be put on a sound footing with the establishment of a Committee and the writing of Club Rules. This was done and the club now boasts a membership of 40 individuals, the maximum currently allowed, with a number having their name on a waiting list.

The aim of the Club is to provide a facility in Betws to bring people together, to increase skills and creativity, to involve the over 50’s in community, educational, health and environmental activities and to improve the quality of their lives. The club’s weekly activities continue to reflect this aim, with a number of speakers having attended meetings and given talks and demonstrations on a number of subjects. Local entertainers have also attended the meetings on several occasions and these sessions have been greatly enjoyed by those present. On top of all this, the members enjoy their weekly raffles enhanced by the tea served by Graham, the tea boy and home made refreshments provided by the members themselves.

Activities are not confined to the clubhouse and many a trip has been enjoyed to places such as Aberystwyth, Haverfordwest and Tenby plus visits to the ballet in Cardiff. Members have also donned their skates and enjoyed an ice skating session. Future events include a visit to the Celtic Manor Hotel where members will enjoy the 5 star food and wine.

An important part of the club’s activity is it’s involvement in charity work and in 2005, the club was able to present a cheque for the sum of £1,250 to the Noah’s Ark Appeal. The club continues to support this worthwhile charity as well as others such as the Alzheimer’s Society.

At their last meeting, the club thanked the committee and members of Betws RFC by presenting them with an impressive plaque in appreciation of being allowed the use of the premises. Pictured receiving the plaque from Chairperson Jean Evans and Treasurer Graham Vaughan is Club Secretary Jeff Thomas. The Secretary of the Over 50’s Club, Audrey Jones was also present but their President, County Councillor Dorian Evans was unable to attend.
